EXCERPT:

Victoria headed to the dining hall, empty except for two greys at the table farthest from the buffet. They eyed her and whispered to each other behind their long, spindly-fingered hands. She grabbed what looked to be a sandwich with purple bread and green toppings—nothing fuzzy, so she set it on her tray and hurried back to her room. No point in sticking around where she wasn’t wanted.
While she ate, Victoria studied the class textbook on her tablet. Their first lab was to study various cognitive reactions to differing objects. Kaye had already decided they were going to study the heart rate of individuals in their reactions to various races at the school. Sure her partner just wanted to prove how much everyone hates Terrans, Victoria agreed anyway. No point in arguing. She’d already observed plenty of other cues indicating their disdain for her.
Fifteen minutes before the scheduled lab time, she left, heading to the psychology wing. The hall lights had been dimmed compared to the daytime and gave the place an eerie glow. Though the greys had denied ever abducting anyone from Earth, Victoria might have believed otherwise if she happened to meet one along the way. Her pulse raced as she eyed the numbers on each door, trying to locate the correct one.
“C’mon, already.”
Victoria gasped, placing her palm on her chest.
“Oh, come on. Don’t tell me I managed to scare a Terran.”
“My name is Victoria.” She’d had enough of being referred to by her home planet, as if everyone on Earth was related and possessed the same personality and motivation. “And you just caught me off guard. It’s late, and I’m tired.”
“That’s strange.” Kaye held the door open as Victoria ducked into the room. “I thought your kind thrived at night.”
She surveyed the area, rubbing her arms. “Not me. I just want to get this over with and return to bed.” A wave of sleepiness washed over her at the thought.
“Fine.” Kaye’s antennae stood straight up rather than curving forward like they normally did. She’d lost her six inch glass claws, her exoskeleton only covering her arms down to her knuckles like a pair of fingerless gloves. “You go into the closet and record the results. I’ll stay out here to welcome our test subjects and hook them up, okay?”
Victoria cocked her head to the side. For the first time since they’d been partnered, Kaye had actually asked her opinion. “I guess.”
“It’s just that if they see you before the test, it will skew the results. I can’t help it if everyone feels that way about your kind. It’s just the way it is.”
With a nod, Victoria entered the cramped smaller room, not much bigger than a broom closet. If she didn’t know any better, she would have believed Kaye felt bad about the discrimination. Was the leabu beginning to soften? She could only hope.

EXCERPT:

Walking into the silky rear-end of an uidiss, she came to an abrupt halt. The creature had been walking at a steady pace and then stopped. She’d failed to notice in time. Wiping fluff off her face, she turned around and walked into another hard body. “I’m so sorry.”

Hands clamped down on her arms. “Are you all right?”

She stared up into deep brown eyes. Chewing her bottom lip, she nodded. If this man hadn’t been holding on to her, she would have fallen to the ground. The word swoon held no meaning for her until now.

Am I only like this because of the ipsum I inhaled back home? Or was there something more she found heart-racing about the blue-skinned, well-muscled hunk of an Ubetron who held her up?

No, she couldn’t feel anything for him. Their races had been sworn enemies for years. Everyone across the galaxy knew that. Yet here she was, standing face to face, gazing intently at him, with no will to move.

He smiled at her, drawing her attention from his eyes to his lips. How would they taste? She’d never kissed anyone intimately before.

“You look familiar. What’s your name?”

Name? Gods, what was her name? “Ni…Nixie.” Had she told him, or only thought the word?

He released her arms to brush his fingers along her jaw line. How she remained standing, she had no idea.

“Nixie. A beautiful name belonging to a beautiful woman. Have we met before?”

Moisture pooled between her thighs. Her cheeks warmed. “Thank you, but no.” She’d definitely remember meeting him.

As he trailed a hand down her arm, she sighed. Her entire body tingled from his gentle touch.

“Okay, weird. You must remind me of someone else. Now tell me, why were you in such a rush that you walked into the rear end of that slow-moving beast? We’re supposed to be on vacation, enjoying all this planet has to offer.”

Laughing at his description of the uidiss, she leaned against his arm. Never before had she enjoyed a man’s attention like this. “I’m not visiting. I live here. Have my whole life.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Really? So, what was it like growing up on the pleasure planet?”

EXCERPT:

Bryce raised his crossbow, lining his sights on the creature standing amongst the bushes, its branch-like tentacles undulating in the gentle breeze. Focusing the crosshairs on the alien’s torso, he drew in a deep breath. He had one shot. If he missed, the Erebus would cry out and alert the natives of Terra to its existence, resulting in more casualties. At first glance, no one on the planet, also called Earth, would believe an Erebus anything more than an overgrown bush, but Bryce knew the truth. He’d trained to hunt the creatures from childhood.

Each step carefully placed, he advanced until he stood twenty feet from the Erebus, no chance to miss the shot. With a slight movement of his finger, he squeezed the trigger, sending a zuranium-tipped arrow racing toward the alien.

“Quinn, would you grab me another garbage bag?”

Fornax. The creature lunged toward the female voice, Bryce’s arrow stuck in one of its tentacles. A kill, but not instant.

He loaded another arrow. At the risk of being seen, he charged through the hedges. He had to cut the Erebus off before it had a chance to kill the Terran. He leaped over metal furniture and large urns, keeping his focus on the creature.

“What the hell? Get out of my yard!”

The woman rushed him, but Bryce darted around her. When the Erebus lumbered in front of him, he raised his weapon and fired. A clean shot to the middle. The creature dropped like a fallen log, crushing the furniture it landed on.

Bryce loaded the crossbow again. No time to celebrate the kill. He had to worry about the possibility of other Erebus in the area, along with the Terran woman who had seen him. Instead of running away screaming, as he’d expected her to do, she stared, wide-eyed in horror. Not at him, but the Erebus. Her body trembled as she shuffled backward, mumbling incomprehensible words.

An unexpected sense of familiarity washed over him. He couldn’t draw his attention away from her slim figure, the way her long brown hair flowed over her shoulders. Far more attractive than he’d pictured the Terrans when others talked about them. He took a closer glance. Lalia? How had she traveled so far from home without anyone knowing? She was no stranger, and definitely not Terran. Or, perhaps she was simply a doppelganger of the woman he’d once loved. He had the sudden urge to comfort her, relieve her worry. Hold her in his arms the way he had many years ago. But what if the missing princess had somehow made her way to a planet unaware life existed beyond their own? After she’d left Hemera and him behind without so much as a goodbye, he’d searched everywhere. Though not once had he thought to look on Terra.

A ground-shattering bellow pierced the night. Bryce spun around, finding himself face-to-face with another Erebus. It stared at him with beady red eyes. Thick black goop dripped from its mouth.

Bryce raised his bow, but the creature slammed him with one of its tentacles, flinging him back. The Erebus lunged at Lalia.

Rolling to his knees, Bryce aimed and fired. He hit the alien from behind, launching it forward. Onto his former lover. Slinging the bow over his shoulder, he raced toward her. The creature’s tentacles still pulsed, even though dead. Careful not to trip himself up, he shoved his hands under the creature’s torso and heaved it off her.

Lalia stood immediately and wiped the black goop from her clothes, as if she hadn’t been flattened by an alien. “They weren’t supposed to follow me. I was supposed to be safe here.”

New Release from Jessica E. Subject - Made For Her

MADE FOR HER
By Jessica E. Subject

Can Dare convince Colonel Jones to train him to fly to space and find a way into her heart? Or will long kept secrets unhinge the entire clone project?

After terrorists murder the love of her life, Colonel Mikayla Jones trains squadron after squadron of the clones he brought to life, to take to the skies. When she discovers a young clone of her husband in her newest class, her world spins out of control. How can she command the look-a-like when she can’t help but yearn for him to fill an ache in her heart?

Dare was created to be the best. As the first Daniel clone to leave Onatria labs, he needs to prove he is more than just a DNA copy. To do that, he must rely on the wife of the man who donated his genes. But when she refuses to train him, Dare faces discharge and returning to the labs. Can he convince Colonel Jones to finish his training and find a way into her bed? Or will long kept secrets unhinge the entire clone project?

Please note: Made For Her was previously published with another publisher. It has been revised and expanded from the original version. This version also includes the short story, Replicated Consequences, which takes place in the same world.

Made For Her Excerpt  – Dare’s POV

Rating: Adult

Dare rolled off his cot then left the barracks, his body sore from the last few weeks of hell. Major Thompson had sent them right from the classroom to physical training, as if they were still in basic. When they ran flight simulations, Thompson assigned him the first officer’s seat rather than the captain’s. The only time Dare had the chance to fly as captain, he’d fucked up the take-off and crashed the simulated plane. Not an ideal way to start, but he required more practice. His squadron only had two weeks left before their first flight, and he felt no more ready to fly a plane than he had a month ago. He’d studied his flight manuals every night, but they did not compare to practical experience. Somehow, some way, he had to convince Colonel Jones to come back and train him. He needed to be prepared.

He walked up to the colonel’s house and knocked on the door. Waiting for her to answer, Dare noticed his foot tapping. When had he started that habit?

“D32, what are you doing on my doorstep? I told you never to come back.”

He spun around to see her standing at the end of the path leading to her house, another man only a few steps behind her. The major. An unexpected, gut-wrenching anger filled him, making his blood boil.
“Go home now, Thompson,” she said. “You are wasting your time.”
The man leaned forward as if to kiss her, but she stepped to the side. Dare held in the urge to punch him. Violence wouldn’t win him any points with the woman whose help he needed.
Thompson turned toward him, his gaze ready to kill. “And yet there is a cadet on your doorstep.”
She placed a hand on the major’s chest. “He’s wasting his time, too. But he’s my problem to deal with.”
Colonel Jones grimaced as Thompson stormed away, before advancing toward her house and Dare. “Lieutenant, are we going to have a problem here or are you going to leave now?”

Dare put his hands up. “I have no problems. I just want to know why you left when you first saw me; why you never came back.”

“I told you, I was reassigned, though it’s none of your business.”

“Oh, really? I think it is my business since you asked to be reassigned.” He shouldn’t have said that. It was information he’d overheard from a private conversation. But he was on a roll. “It was because of me, right? You hate slugs, and you can’t stand the fact that one of us may look like your husband.”
“That’s enough.”

She glared at him, but he kept going. He had to know. “You hate the idea of training me. You hate me.”

Her bottom lip trembled. “I don’t hate you.”

Gods, what had he done? Was she going to…cry? He’d never seen any of his commanding officers show any sign of emotion other than anger. But he couldn’t help himself. “Why, then?”

“Because you weaken me.” She slipped by him and tried to unlock her door.

“I weaken you? I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

She fumbled as she tried to insert the key chip. Then she turned toward him. “You’re exactly like Daniel. Your mannerisms, your voice, and that annoying foot tap when you’re impatient. I can’t concentrate when I’m around you. I can’t be strong, be a leader.”

She opened the door, but Dare made sure she couldn’t close it. He used his body as an obstruction.
She gasped. “You can’t come in. Leave me alone.”

He pushed the door open, surprised she hadn’t yet reminded him of his rank. “I can help you be strong.”

Her gaze met his, and he shuddered at the vulnerability in her eyes. “I….”

“I need you to train me.” He longed to touch her, imagined the soft ply of her skin as he ran the tips of his fingers across every inch. Pulling her toward him crossed his mind, but he needed her training more than her body. “I’ve only run one simulation as captain.”

She reeled back, probably for the best. “What? You should be running at least one every day.”
“I know. That’s why I’m here.” He yearned to hold her, to feel her breath on his skin. Thank goodness she hadn’t looked down. She wouldn’t appreciate the salute he had for her.

“I can’t believe Major Thompson is being such an ass. Actually, yes I can. I’ll talk to General Madison tonight. You’ll be back in the simulators tomorrow, as captain.” She turned and stomped away. Had she dismissed him?

“Wait…please, Colonel Jones. I need more practice than that. I need to be the best.”
Her hard eyes and pursed lips gave him a jolt when she turned back toward him. “I’ll see that the general allows you some extra practice time.”
